University of California, Santa Cruz Assistant Engineer Work Management JOB #: xxxx275 FULL TIME; CAREER Salary Range: $35 -$43/hourly. Salary commensurate w/qualifications and experience. Under direction of the Associate Director: coordinates, engineers, manages design consultants, estimates, drafts plans, processes contracts, obtains work force (contractors or University personnel), oversees construction, inspects work for code requirements, finalizes construction close-out and verifies completion for payment of engineering and construction projects. Strong emphasis in management of the following systems and equipment: heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, kitchen machinery, and automatic controls' systems common to all UCSC buildings. Scope of work to include managing the installation, modification, alteration, repair and improvements to major University systems and buildings with emphasis on mechanical systems. Participates in the initial co-ordination of projects, recommending engineering and architectural design consistent with University standards and standards in energy efficiency and sustainability. Manages design consultants preparation of contract document plans and specifications. Drafts plans for review by client and for construction documents. Retains engineering and architectural consultants when necessary. Derives estimates for clients for evaluation of costs. Writes specifications conforming to the University Facilities Manual, and the Uniform Building Codes. Prepares all documents for the bidding process and supervises project pre-bid walk-through. Manages construction as the University's Representative, with responsibility for budget, engineering and architectural changes and inspection of work for compliance to University standards and industry codes. Closes-out construction, insuring adherence with contract documents and exercise payment release to contractor. The emphasis of this position is management of mechanical and plumbing projects as well as other projects to include but not limited to campus electrical, structural, civil and landscaping. Knowledge of and experience in replacement of boilers, chillers, pumps, water storage tanks, air compressors, vacuum pumps, water softeners, cooling towers, hydronic systems, exchangers, various kitchen machinery and equipment, refrigeration, etc. and the required start-up of these systems and equipment. Knowledge of electronic controls for: automatic control systems, building energy management and monitoring systems. Knowledge of fire safety regulations and equipment as it relates to mechanical, electrical and plumbing projects. Knowledge of and experience with USGBC LEED requirements Job emphasis is on consultant coordination, engineering, design, analysis, and project management. Qualifications include: Graduation from college with a major in engineering, architecture or project management and two years project management experience or equivalent of at least six years progressively responsible experience in construction project management. Knowledge of, or construction experience as a journeyman, contractor, field engineer, project manager, or other engineering duties within a government agency. Abilities to estimate, plan, prioritize, schedule, and organize projects and work orders. Good oral communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with campus personnel, which include staff, students, and faculty. Knowledge of, and ability to use, PC software: PC-DOS, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Auto-cad., scheduling programs.
