831-247-xxxx VOICING A TUBE AMP Tubes are the first thing you want to experiment with when you after a a different sound from your amp. NOS and used pulls of USA and European made tubes can have a profound effect on the way your amp will sound. For a good description of how different brands sound I suggest you check out Brent Jesse's audiotubes.com. He has detailed descriptions of how the different tubes sound made by different manufacturers. Changing tubes in the first stage to a Telefunken, a Mullard, an Amperex, an RCA or a GE will all sound different. Experimentation is really what is necessary and having an assortment of different tubes to try out is important. Maybe your service tech can help you out if he has some of these tubes. Beyond this, there are other things that you can change in your tube amp that will help to voice your amp the way you want it. This involves changing the values of capacitors and resistors at different points in your amplifier. Coupling caps that isolate one tube stage from the next stage can be changed allowing more or less bass to get to the next stage of a preamp tube. A larger value cap allows more bass through while a smaller value cap allows less bass into the next stage. You can change the tone capacitors- Fender, Vox and Marshall all have different values for the Treble, Midrange and Bass circuits. Other ways to change the tone involve changes to the capacitors and resistors in the cathode bypass circuits. Obviously there are other areas to consider but this gives an introduction of where to start. chrisbolandrepair@gmail.com 831-247-xxxx More info can be found in Gerald Weber's books and different sites on the net.
